Writing Annotated Bibliographies

Annotated bibliographies are lists of citations accompanied by a brief evaluative paragraph discussing the citation and its relevance to the project that the author of the bibliography is working on. Annotated bibliographies (ABs) are documents typically assigned in the classroom as a way to have students work through research and report back on its relevancy for their essay, thesis, or dissertation.

Annotations are not abstracts: abstracts are descriptive summaries, and annotations should not only summarize the source but also evaluate it according to its reference and quality for the author’s project.

In practice, it means going through and producing short summaries of various sources. The AB has two main points of work: finding sources, and writing your short summaries of those sources.
